Quoting from the website........
TSA
is a national non-profit voluntary health
organization with 54 chapters in the USA and over 30
contacts in other countries. Members include people
with TS, their relatives and other interested,
concerned supporters.
TSA was established in 1972 by a handful of N.Y.
families whose loved ones had Tourette Syndrome.
They came together to help others seeking a proper
treatment for a TS diagnosis. Although
first described in 1885 by Georges Gilles de la
Tourette, these founding families believed that
there were only 50 known cases in all of recorded
medical history!
As a result of TSA's medical and public education,
the gap between symptom onset and a diagnosis has
narrowed to the point where families are diagnosed
more quickly than in the past when it could take 10
years or more.
The Association is governed by a nationally
representative, democratically elected Board of
Directors. Treatment policies and medical
information are overseen by our volunteer national
Medical Advisory Board, and applications to TSA's
research grant award program are peer reviewed by
the Scientific Advisory Board.
National TSA remains the primary source of accurate
and up-to-date information about TS, its treatment,
relevant scientific research, and consumer services.
TSA publishes a quarterly Newsletter (40,000
readers), maintains a crisis hotline, produces
valuable literature for people with TS and their
families, medical and allied professionals,
educators, and legislators.
Client Services
To better serve all people with TS, the Association
maintains a crisis hotline, physician referral
listings by state and medical referrals in other
countries. For specific help, contact the national
office and ask for our Information and Referral
Specialist. TSA also maintains a counseling
program specifically for New York City Residents!
Publications and Videos
TSA publishes a wide variety of brochures and films
relevant to the needs of families and people with
TS, educators, counselors, insurers, lawyers,
physicians and scientists. Media public service
announcements -- print ads, TV and radio spots are
available for local placement. Also see the TSA
Catalog of Publications and Order Form.
